Florida Sites

Jonathan Dickinson State Park
1660 S.E. Federal Highway
Hobe Sound, FL 33455
(561) 546-2771

Directions - 13 miles south of Stuart on US 1. The entrance is on the west side of the road.

Description - Park has two campgrounds "Pinewood Groves" and "River Side". The campgrounds are shaded and the sites are somewhat separated with natural plant life. There is a day park complete with a concession stand offering canoe rentals as well as ice, fire wood and snacks. Park includes multiple nature trails and a paved boat ramp. There is a canoe run that takes you to Trapper Nelsons. This historic site still contains original building and cages where trapped animals were kept.

John Prince Park
Directions - Take 6th Ave South exit from I95, go west to Congress Ave and then 1/4 north
2700 6th Avenue South
Lake Worth, FL 33461
(561) 582-7992

Description - Small park right in the middle of Lake Worth. The park has a number of daytime picnic areas that can be reserved for groups - complete with small pavilions. There is an asphalt jogging trail and a heart course. The camping area is designed for over nighters but not seclusion. There are a few sites right on Lake Osborne which is suitable for water skiing. The campground has a paved boat ramp. There are a couple of community fire pits but other than those, there are no ground fires permitted. This is a great place if your goals are fishing and boating as opposed to getting back to nature.

Juniper Springs
Directions - Located on the north side of highway 40 half way between Ocala and Daytona. It is 4.5 miles west of highway 19

Description - One of the most scenic camping areas that I have visited in Florida. This park has both primitive and civilized areas. There is a great fresh water spring that functions as a large outdoor swimming pool complete with a diving area and a shallow fenced off area for small children. Since the water temperature is 72 degrees year round and the entire campground is naturally shaded, this is one of the best sites I have found for camping in the middle of a hot Florida summer. Even though you are surrounded by the Ocala National Forest, it seems like there is always a gentle breeze blowing during the summer months.

Manatee Hammock
Directions - Located on the east side of US 1 in Titusville, 4 miles south of Hwy 50, and just south of the causeway leading to the Kennedy Space Center.
7275 South U.S. 1
Titusville, Florida 32780
(321) 264-5083

Description - A truly pleasant campground located on the edge of the Indian River. You can fish from the campground's own dock. And if you are lucky enough to catch a shuttle launch the view should be spectacular from the east side of the campground. There is a swimming pool, horseshoe pit and 2 shuffle board courts available to campers. The equipment is available for checkout from the front desk at no charge. There are two recreation rooms available with tables and chairs. Except for a large field on the east side near the volley ball net, the entire campground is well shaded. Beware there is a strict rule against ground fires although you may bring your own above ground pit.

Peace River Camp Grounds
Directions - On highway 70 just west of the town of Arcadia

Description - Campground offers two camping areas; The civilized camping area is equipped with showers in the restrooms as well as a small country store, swimming pool and horse shoe pit. The primitive area is located down a two tracker through the woods down by the river. A couple of the best sites are along side the river itself. The civilized sites each have an above ground grill and ground fires are permitted in the wilderness area except during dry seasons. Beware of the rainy season since the river is known to invade the primitive area. The campground allows pets and sometimes even has a dog parade. There is also an ice cream social every weekend. During the warm Florida summer the pool is a great way to cool off. Playing at rivers edge looking for sharks teeth is another great way to beat the Florida heat.

Quiet Waters
6601 N. Powerline Road
Pompano Beach, FL 33073
(305) 360-1315
Directions - From I-95, go west on SW 10th Street, then north on Powerline road

Description - This park has limited camping. All sites are located on a small lake surrounding the campgrounds. There is a small fire pit on each site. A day park contains picnic areas with covered pavilions. There is also an automated water skiing area where skiers are pulled by a cable and rope system rather than boats. This is a simple weekend get away but definitely not primitive. You can rent tents which will be set up for you upon your arrival. These tents are set up on small wooden platforms off the ground.

The campground has a pool. and horse shoe pits. The camp store has all the basics. Stone Mountain State Park North Carolina
(919) 733-PARK
e-mail parkinfo@ncmail.net.

Description  - Absolutely wonderful campground. Tent sites are somewhat secluded. Tent pads are large. Restroom and showers are both close and clean. Wake up to deer crossing the road next to your site and rabbits grazing in the field behind you. Not many extras but definitely an out in the deep woods type of site. There are a number of beautiful and scenic hiking trails leading to water falls and the mountain summit. Beware some of the trails are strenuous and leaving the trails can be dangerous. There is rick climbing available. Our group also so wild turkeys, turtles and a six point buck.
